Being British we are used to hearing the word ‘stiff’ being applied to all manner of things, including crisply ironed shirts with stiff collars.

In contrast, this month we are highlighting the trend seen by our new Head Shirt-Cutter Tom Bradbury towards softer, brushed cotton fabrics to keep the chill out in these ever-coldening days. For this season’s bespoke shirts, Tom recommends two specific brushed cotton cloths, both with a soft handle and luxurious feel worn against the skin.

Tom’s first choice is Alumo’s unique ‘Flanello’, as seen here. A brushed 100% cotton 2-ply cloth. For over 100 years Alumo has been producing the finest shirt cloths in Switzerland and their soft Flanello range is typical of the super soft handle of brushed cotton, a true luxury worn on cold days.

Tom’s second recommendation is Thomas Mason’s ‘Twill 1818’, a single-ply 100% brushed cotton cloth with a lightweight, soft feel.

Tom has taken over the helm at our bespoke shirt-cutting department from Mr Robert Whittaker, who recently retired after more than 25 years at Dege & Skinner.
