So for anyone who hears the word ‘yes’ to their proposal, you need to think about the wedding outfit. A morning suit is worn and these days, could be an elegant three-piece in grey, with tie and sometimes the waistcoat too is co-ordinated with the bridesmaids’ dresses. Or more traditionally, a black herringbone coat with peaked lapels, grey ‘cashmere’ stripe trousers and a dove grey or buff waistcoat in wool, sometimes linen.

Striped trousers come in a variety of styles and your Cutter will be able to advise on the most flattering stripe. An alternative to stripes? Black & white dogtooth check, known as ‘spongebag’ in the US.

Single (with the bottom button always left undone) or double breasted waistcoat in grey or buff, although other plain colours or lightly patterned soft tones are also popular.

There is no rule for the tie, but softer tones look best or a cravat can be worn with a pin. For the shirt we recommend a plain coloured shirt with white collar & cuffs, worn with a pair of cufflinks.

Classic black lace-up Oxford or sometimes Brogue shoes, worn with grey or black socks and if wearing braces, then felt is advised, fitted with buttons. Gloves? Top hat & grey gloves are optional for weddings, but essential for Ascot.
