Merchant Taylors’ Company
The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of the City of London. Livery Companies, or Guilds as they were previously known, began in Medieval times as fraternities designed to protect a particular trade. There are now 108 City Livery Companies and Merchant Taylors’ is one of the original twelve, ranked six or seven in precedence.
Our current Chairman Michael Skinner was the first practising Master Tailor for 350 years to be elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors, which was founded in 1327.
The Company reconnected with its trade in 1974 and hosts the finals of the coveted ‘Golden Shears’ Awards and the annual Festival Dinner of the official trade charity.
