Introducing the Phitwell

Celebrating 161 years as a family-owned bespoke tailor, we’ve had the pleasure of dressing all manner of person over our long company history. And our bespoke tailoring is a good investment!

Actor Rudolph Valentino’s safari suit with traditional breeches fetched $20,000 when auctioned in New York City by Bonhams, as part of their film memorabilia sale on 30th November 2016.

Innovation

During the course of our lengthy company history, we've been known for innovation in many areas of business, service and of course, in the creation of high quality, tailored bespoke clothing.

Our inaugural and pioneering bespoke trunk show in Cheltenham in 1928, acquisition of ceremonial robe maker Wilkinson & Son in 1939, travelling to America in 1964 for the first bespoke trunk shows hosted by now Chairman, Master Tailor Michael Skinner, selling under license in Japan from 1977 onwards (a highly successful venture that continues to thrive), the launch of Savile Row’s first, and still its sole, permanent bespoke shirt-maker (we cut all our bespoke shirts here inside the shop at Number 10 Savile Row).

Fits Well!

Innovative back in the 1930s, the Phitwell® shooting coat was design registered in the last Century when it was first cut and created by our current Managing Director William Skinner’s Grandfather. The design remains a perennial favourite for shooting and stalking on grouse moors.

What sets the Phitwell® apart is its fully sprung and laced internal rear lining. This allows the wearer to flex their arms and adopt a prone position without the cloth riding up and causing unnecessary ‘bagging’ around the shoulders and neck.

Endless Choice

Often worn on country estates, here's a contemporary example of a Phitwell.

In a 14oz lilac check tweed, featuring a 3-button front, suede leather shoulder patch with bellows patch pockets.

Worn over a matching single-breasted waistcoat with notch lapels and postboy pockets.

The shirt and tie are from a selection available to buy online and in-store here on London's prestigious Savile Row.

All bespoke orders are cut in our ground floor Cutting Room, before being tailored downstairs in our dedicated tailoring workrooms, which are unique to London’s prestigious Savile Row, the true home of fine bespoke menswear.
